Are Atheist Countries Better Off?
Once again, statistics are manipulated to “prove” a foregone conclusion. In a recent Free Inquiry article, the atheists’ hero, Phil Zuckerman attempts to show that belief in God is somehow detrimental to society and that atheism and agnosticism create greater societal health. He gives credit for the majority of his article to Gregory S. Paul. Paul is an artist and freelance paleontologist and not a statistician or sociologist. True statisticians have called his work invalid and unacceptable. George H. Gallup International Institute (of “Gallup” polls) has said of Paul’s study that it “does not pass scholarly muster”.
Nations listed by Paul as being at the top in societal health (supposedly because of their secularism/ “organic atheism”) include Norway, Sweden, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Denmark.
A few notes of interest on a few of these countries include the fact that 33% of Netherlanders support a Pedophile Political Party. Denmark offers animal bordellos for those wanting to engage in sex with barnyard animals. Suicide is significantly higher in most of these countries than in religious countries.
Bestiality, pedophilia and suicide don’t appeal to me. However, I have no objection to atheists and agnostics congregating in these great bastions of societal health.
As far as the United States being a Christian country, I would suggest rather that we are a post Christian society, and that is the reason for the increased crime and immorality in this country. When we started kicking God out of the public arena, that is when the enemy started moving in.
"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good." Psalm 53:1
"Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight." Psalm 9:19
"Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth." Psalm 46:10

Why didn't he include other atheist countries like China, North Korea, Laos and Vietnam? The more atheist a country gets, the more corrupt and repressive it gets. Soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian military contacted our military asking that we help them set up a chaplain corp. Their reason? After decades of atheism, they thought their junior officers did not have the moral compass to lead the military. I wrote more on the subject about a year ago, here.
Good question and good point. Actually, Zuckerman likes to distinguish between "Organic Atheism" and "Coercive Atheism".
Will read your post now...
That was a very sloppy piece of research.
Very interesting that he is not even a proper social scientist.
God Bless
Matthew
Amen! Picking some small countries that are well protected by bigger countries also makes his "organic" argument weaker.
And, of course, if there is no God then how can he say anything is detrimental? What is his standard? I think it was Doestevsky who said, "If there is no God, everything is permissible."
