Wanda Sykes - Hate Speech

I've listened to Rush for years on an irregular basis, but enough to say that I've never ever heard him wish death on anyone. So when I heard about and watched the video of Obama getting a good laugh from some 2nd rate comedienne saying that she hoped Rush's kidneys failed, it just reaffirmed for me my belief that liberals are the real haters. While conservative pundits criticize policies and ideals, liberals tend to stoop to name calling - more times than not because they can't make a valid, intelligent case for their positions.

If you watch the video I linked to above, you'll notice that not everyone was rolling in the aisle at the kidney joke. Even some of these liberals obviously thought she went too far...and managed to get a nervous laugh out so as not to be "uncool" by not laughing at her sick joke. She noticed it too, because she even remarked that she knew they were laughing on the inside. Right, Wanda. You are just so funny.

Sykes, a lesbian, said recently " the passage of California’s Proposition 8 made her feel like she was 'attacked'."

“Now, I gotta get in their face,” she said. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

I would say you are a pretty good attacker yourself. Made a point to mention Rush's former addiction to pain meds. Getting addicted to pain medications is not quite the same as doing coke and smoking weed socially. Another low blow against Rush that was uncalled for.

Hateful. Liberals. Gays. They talk about tolerance, but they have none themselves. They talk about hate - but they know it better than anyone.

As for Obama laughing at the possibility of Rush's kidneys failing...

I'm with Rush. I hope Obama fails too, because if he succeeds, our country will cease to exist as we know it.

And my kidneys are just fine, thank you.

Good points, Ms. Green. I expect that from people like Sykes. I expect better from Obama & Co. but am not surprised by their reactions.

What is even more pathetic is that a faux "reverend" and his wife thought that Sykes' bit on Rush was so hilarious that they almost fell off the couch -- http://chuckcurrie.blogs.com/chuck_currie/2009/05/limbaugh-the-20th-hijacker.html . Classy, eh?

Liberal "Christianity" is virtually indistinguishable from pagan beliefs.

Sykes had to lie to set up her dig. Rush doesn't want the country to fail, of course. He wants Obama's policies to fail. There is no way both can succeed.

And Sykes feels attacked by people stating the obvious that marriage is a union of a man and a woman? They sure are thin-skinned.

Neil, I checked out the link you left on the UCC "minister". I have to agree - if there was ever a "faux reverend" he's one. Hey - at least HIS wife's name is Liz and not Jim. :)

My husband just told me of a sad situation he knew about where a former pastor of his resigned from the church because of a messy divorce and severe financial problems. If he belonged to the UCC he wouldn't have had to resign.

That minister can just find a denomination with no sense of church discipline. My parent's have been in the Disciples of Christ denomination their whole lives (~80 years) and sadly I think they are naive to how much it has lost. They are finally leaving their current church because it is hiring a Joel Osteen-type speaker who got divorced and married someone from his church (the timeline isn't clear but the church isn't asking any questions). He wasn't good enough for the Presbyterians but this church couldn't be happier to pick him up.

I find the chick amusing, but this is nowhere near her best stuff. The reason is, as Neil said, she had to make stuff up. Good humor is based on truth, which is why most of us on the right don't see anything funny in what she says. The left believes Rush wants the country to fail, so they laugh. They believe he's all they say he is so they laugh. In the meantime, we're yawning.

I didn't know the chick was a lesbian. That's too bad.

All in all, I don't much care about this episode. Nothing here surprises in the least. I would expect nothing better. A certain blogger who finds me beneath contempt finds the whole thing hilarious. I can't believe that even libs were rolling on the floor, it wasn't that funny, but they sure dig the digs. That's all that matters. Let them have their little laugh. The left are kids with too much rope. It won't be long before the hangin' and we've got to prepare and try to minimize the pain to the rest of us.

The reactions that come from our President seem so childish and out of place for the leader of a great country. Even bowing and scraping and shaking hands with known enemies seems uncalled for and unwise. If only we had elected an adult. Then the crew that came with him are unaware that there ARE smart people out here, who can see, think and discern truth from lies. I pray for the Lord's soon return! The politicians of the land with sound judgment are few and without any power. God help us! mom2

What an absolutely true statement. I would take it a step further. We have even fewer "statesman" in this country - those who would stand for principles, virtue, and righteousness and not bow down to pressure to compromise.

Isn't it also interesting that the Liberals, including Obama, have consistently made fun and yuk at conservatives for listening to a "right-wing extremist entertainer {Rush Limbbaugh)(their definition) ", and they have the audacity to watch, listen, and roll in the isles to the hate and trash talk of left-wing extremist Wanda Sykes. Go figure. Obama should be ashamed and humiliated for even attending such a hate centered event. This kind of insensitive behavior is fast becoming his presidential MO. I like what Marshall Art said, "Just wait for the hangin!" If we give them enough rope they'll do it themselves. God Bless, Herm

Ms. Sykes is a comedian...those were jokes. She was funny! Funny is funny...unless you just don't get it!

So I'm assuming that you think because someone is a comedienne, anything and anyone is fair game?

For instance, you have no problem with making jokes about blacks, homosexuals and handicapped people? As long as it is funny?

Actually, Ms. Green, I ran with some dudes who found nothing out of bounds for mockery. The only thing we found offensive was a joke that wasn't funny. Jokes, almost by definition, are based on suffering or humiliation. I once heard that laughter is really not a reaction of joy, but of discomfort over vicarious experience, or empathy with the "victim" of the joke. Some jokes have fictitious characters, some real-life characters. But in every case, and it's a challenge to find a joke where this isn't true, there exists some level of suffering which is what provokes the laughter.

So with the friends with whom I grew up, the more offensive the joke, the better, and funnier. Nothing was out of bounds.

What can be appropriately addressed in this case is the setting. It wasn't a Friars Roast, where the humor gets as nasty as it gets, nor is such appropriate in this case where the whole world can see it.

One of my daughters was having trouble with self-image and being made fun of while she was in junior high. I asked her if at any time was the insult actually funny. She said sometimes it was. I told her that if what the person says is indeed funny, that is, if it wasn't her would she laugh, then she should just laugh. If someone makes fun of her and is good at it, she should laugh and that will defuse the situation. If the mock is poor, she can then say, "c'mon, can't you do better than that?" Soon, she couldn't tell if someone was laughing with her or at her because she realized it didn't matter. She knew who she was. (At the same time, I counseled her to be kind in her teasing of others.) Her sense of humor developed as a result and so did her self-image.

I relate this because though I know Sykes was basing her humor on lies, it didn't matter either way. There's no reason for conservatives to have thin skin about anything. That's for lefties to worry about. This whole episode is a non-issue for me. I just consider the source.

Jokes are funny or not funny in the eyes of the beholder. (Or is that "ears" of the beholder?)

When jokes become personal rather than general, they become attacks rather than just quips.

I am a frequent user of self-depracating humor, and I appreciate your story about your daughter. I love humor. It has a way of dismantling even one's worst critic, and has the ability to endear others to you if you use it properly. However, when it is used improperly in the political realm, or when used as a thinly-veiled ad hominem attack, it no longer is humor and becomes distateful and repulsive. In this case, I believe Sykes crossed that line - and having herself said earlier that Prop 8 felt like "an attack", she displays herself as a hypocrite with purely political motives rather than a stand up comedienne trying to draw out a laugh.

Very sad to see you opposing one hate speech while standing by another one. Two wrongs don't make it right. Do I find Syke's comments disgusting? Of course, YES!! Same thing goes with Rush's hate speech and people like you who stand by him!! I wonder what happened to sanity of our people? When did we change into such a bunch of strong hate/fear mongers? Where were Rush, you and other ditto heads when George Bush was spending out of control? Did you wish George Bush fail too??

With all due respect, this game of partisan politics is spinning out of control, encouraged by dishonest media outlets such as MSNBC, FOX NEWS, Rush Limbagh and NY Times.

Ms Green, RE: " Gays. They talk about tolerance, but they have none themselves. They talk about hate - but they know it better than anyone."

It is natural progression. When one has no morals anything is fair game.

It goes something like this:

If you can disregard God by engaging in Homosexual relations, you can lie.

If you can lie, you can steal.

If you can steal, you can kill.

When one willfully breaks one commandment, and homosexuality breaks about 5 of them, it becomes easier to break the others. Nothing is off limits to the unrepentant sinner.

Their attitude is not surprising. Not surprising at all under the circumstances.

I don't know if you have noticed, but most comedians are very mean spirited. Mean spirited apparently makes better jokes.

But, Emo Philips is funny, and he isn't mean spirited.

V,

When Bush was spending out of control, most of us on the right, including Rush, were lamenting his spending as a very Dem-like thing for a Republican to do. If you'd listen to Rush, you'd know this.

As to alleged hate speech by Rush, I've never heard it, unless one believes any level of mockery is hate speech. If that's the case, some people need to lighten up and get some thicker skin because we don't need panty-waistes further clouding issues with their cry-baby antics. But I've never heard Bush wish someone dead as Sykes did him, and that's about as hateful as it gets.
